Interactive Virtual Reality

  • Users interact through the Internet
  • Each user has a screen where a virtual reality is simulated
  • Client computer controls what shows on the screen and keeps server informed of what this user does and where he/she is.
  • Server computer keeps tracks of user locations, actions and messages

Second Life

Server Computers:

  • Keep track of usernames, passwords, how much money you have, who are your friends, what is in your inventory, etc.
  • Control the login/logoff process
  • Sends messages to the client computers regarding:
  • Objects that are in your neighborhood;
  • Users in your neighborhood, their locations and appearance;
  • Any messages that you should see;
  • Keeps inventory of fixed objects (Real Estate, buildings, etc.)

Client Computers (yours):

  • Control what happens in your computer's screen;
  • Show users and objects in appropriate size, location and appearance;
  • Displays any messages for you;
  • Sends your messages to the Server;
  • Informs server of your actions (location, appearance, inventory, etc.);

Things that you can do:

  • Clothing and objects: You can buy, give away, build. You can carry or wear.
  • Appearance:  You can change your appearance to be tall short, male, female, fat, skinny, etc.
  • Money: You can pay, you can receive money. You can exchange into real money.
  • Moving: You can walk, you can fly, you can teleport, you can use virtual vehicles.
  • Communication: You can talk (by typing) to people in your vicinity; You can IM to anyone you know the name.
  • Interaction: Besides talking you can dance, hug, kiss, whatever.
  • People Network: As a social network, second life can be more effective than chat rooms.
