Databases
What are ...?
Databases are sets of information stored in machine readable form and suitably
organized so as to quickly retrieve and process the information in varied ways.
If you have a file with names and addresses and another with names and phones, this may
not be a database because it may not be easy to relate addresses with phones. In a
database, it should be relatively easy to correlate information.
What are they used for ?
- Small database applications: ex. personal assistants
- Large corporate / government databases
- public databases on the internet:
Database software
Low end:
MS Access, FoxPro, Quattro - run on PC's
High End:
Oracle, DB2 (IBM), msql, mysql - may run on Pc's, Workstations, Mainframes or
supercomputers.
Database operations
The basic operations of a database are the same, whether you are working with a
homemade database of personal information or a massive corporate or government database.
Querying, sorting, and reporting are universal database operations.
