ACSII vs EBCDIC for coding 8 bits

• ASCII - American Standard Code for Information Interchange
• EBCDIC - Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code (IBM)
• 0100 0001 = 65 = A in ASCII a in EBCDIC
• Problems with EBCDIC
  • in searching (words, names, etc) need an order where A comes before B before C
  • uppercase comes before lowercase
  • EBCDIC does not provide this
  • ASCII does
