MEMORY

  • Binary - transistors (on or off, 1 or 0, 5 volts or zero volts)
  • RAM = Random Access Memrory - Volatile - when power goes out, contents lost
  • ROM = Read Only Memory - Non-Volatile - remembers even if lose power
  • Static Memory - Non-Volatile
  • Tradeoffs
    • cost
    • speed
    • RAM is cheap and fast
    • ROM is more expensive and slower
    • Static memory is expensive and fast
  • Most PC have:
    • ROM - to store Basic computer functions
    • ROM - so computer knows how to communicate with the world when it is powered on
    • RAM - like the scratch paper for the computer and software
    • Usually RAM is denoted in MB: 4, 8, 16, 32 etc with increasing cost of course
    • Usually ROM is in KB 32, 64, 128, 256, 512
