Wired and Wireless Networks

Wired Networks:

  • Usually more secure
  • Cost of wiring the premises
  • Higher speeds: usually 100Mbs, can be 1000Mbs
  • More than two computers may communicate at same time at full speed

Wireless Networks:

  • Unsecured or secured
  • Cheaper to install
  • Lower speeds: 11Mbs,55Mbs,108Mbs
  • All computers share the same wireless channel, more traffic reduces speed.
IrDA 1 meter Infrared 9600bps PDA
Bluetooth 10 meters Radio 1Mbps Room Lan
Wi-Fi a,b,g 30 meters Radio 11,54,108 Mbps LAN
WiMax 5 miles /30 miles Radio 70Mbps MAN

Sharing Internet Connections

If you have Internet access and wish to share with more than one computer, you can connect a "Router" (Wired or Wireless) and create your own network.

Home or Small Office Network:

Cable or DSL Line Brings access to the Internet
Cable Modem or DSL Modem Needed to transform the line signals to appropriate Lan signals
Router
Switch
Firewall
Wireless
  • Router can be combined with a Firewall, Switch and Wireless or those can be separate devices. Router detects if a packet is for your network and lets it in; Detects if you are sending a message to the outside and lets it out; also keeps information about what is going on in the network.
  • Since there is only one IP number assigned to your house, the Router also performs something called NAT - Network address translation which is equivalent to establishing extension numbers for the additional computers that you have at home. The penalty for that is that unsolicited traffic from the network cannot be directed to any of the computers in the house; you may direct it to one or none at all!
  • Switch provides multiple ports where you can connect several computers to your network through CAT5 cables
  • Firewall provides simple security precautions to avoid that external computers may access your network without you having initiated the transmission.
  • Wireless may be used to connect other computers
Other appliances can be connected to the network as well
