File System
- Any information recorded on the hard drive for later use is called a
"FILE"
- Files have names and can be organized (logically) into folders
- Physically, information is saved sequentially on the hard drive as in
a long sequence of bytes
- No names in the hard drive!
Where is the file?
- VTOC - special file in the hard drive contains a table with:
- name of each file - head,track and sector where file starts.
What if a file grows?
- VTOC may keep record that file continues in some other location
Fragmentation
Hard drive organized into:
- Track or Cylinder
- Sectors
- Sequential Byte number
