File System

  • Any information recorded on the hard drive for later use is called a "FILE"
  • Files have names and can be organized (logically) into folders
  • Physically, information is saved sequentially on the hard drive as in a long sequence of bytes
  • No names in the hard drive!

Where is the file?

  • VTOC - special file in the hard drive contains a table with:
  • name of each file - head, track and sector where file starts.

What if a file grows?

  • VTOC may keep record that file continues in some other location

Fragmentation

Hard drive organized into:
  • Track or Cylinder
  • Sectors
  • Sequential Byte number
