How does the computer store information?
- We represent information with symbols: digits and
characters
- it is easy for us to recognize symbols
- For the computer it is difficult:
- some symbols are similar, there are many symbols,
etc.
Computers store information in electric
form
Solution: use only two symbols
- easy for the computer:
- one symbol means "off" - we designate that one by 0
- other means "on" - we designate that one by 1
- a bit: a symbol that can assume two possible values 0 or
1.
How can we represent several things with just two symbols?
- we can represent unlimited values using only ten
digits...
- we can write an encyclopedia using only 26 letters of the
alphabet...
- you can group bits:
- most computers handle a group of 8 bits: a
byte
