How does the computer store information?

  • We represent information with symbols: digits and characters
    • it is easy for us to recognize symbols
  • For the computer it is difficult:
    • some symbols are similar, there are many symbols, etc.

Computers store information in electric form

Solution: use only two symbols

  • easy for the computer:
    • one symbol means "off" - we designate that one by 0
    • other means "on" - we designate that one by 1
  • a bit: a symbol that can assume two possible values 0 or 1.

How can we represent several things with just two symbols?

  • we can represent unlimited values using only ten digits...
  • we can write an encyclopedia using only 26 letters of the alphabet...
  • you can group bits:
  • most computers handle a group of 8 bits: a byte
